We are so excited to get the Spartan Bicycle Shop back into the swing of things for the Fall 2023 Semester. We hope everyone had a summer of great experiences. We've been working over the Summer to give the shop and the mechanic role more fluidity and clarity (as well as some new Mechanic Tier Incentives).
We first wanted to check in to see who will be returning to the shop this year and get your general availability for the semester. We would love to have everyone back and participate in the shop as much as possible. We decided to re-format the shop's availability to reduce time commitment strain and clear up clutter in our intake to streamline repairs from Point A to B. We are only taking non-contact weekday repair drop-offs and are limiting the quantity threshold to 3 repairs/week, and it is only open to customers who know the exact repair they need. Weekday walk-ins are only going to be available Monday-Wednesday. This way we don't have to meet with students during the week and it can be a stop-by during the week to complete a repair you've been assigned. Anybody that would like a personalized repair or isn't sure what they need can come in during the weekend walk-ins.
We will be using Microsoft Teams - which all CWRU students have access to and should be downloaded to all Mechanics' Phones - to coordinate shifts, team communications, task lists, and customer details. All returning mechanics have received an invitation to the Mechanics Team already.
Google Calendar: We were able to create a workflow on CampusGroups that schedules all appointments directly and the appointments - time, customer contact, and repair details will be available. All Mechanics have access to the "Spartan Bicycle Shop Scheduling" calendar and can be used as a reminder of upcoming shifts.
We have developed programming for new shop events:
Repair Instructionals in Small Groups (10-15 students, staff) to teach basic on-the-road repairs and leave them with one of the repair kits we have in our inventory as part of their sign-up fee.
We are working with Climate Organizations on Campus and University-Based Climate Action Initiatives to develop some type of programming that we can participate in. We really want to get the ball rolling on an on-campus bike path that extends from Wyant to Veale through the Quad.
Spring Semester Club Relay Race (Teams of 3) that will result in a $25 shop credit per person on the winning team. You will be building out a bike from a stripped-down (not from frame) start point w/ a tool limit that can be exchanged from a location on the opposite end of the quad. Once the bike is built, members will embark on a relay race to a location 1 mile away from Campus, and we will be using Strava to prevent cheating on that end.
Once we have everyone's availability, we will be reaching out regarding our first GB meeting and send out a soft-launch of shift schedules and the week-day that you have been assigned to. Send back any questions or concerns you have regarding your schedule and we will reach back out within 2-3 days with a finalized schedule that you should all adhere to and make GCAL notices for.
Our first task of this semester is going to be finishing up and clearing out all of the bikes that were donated at the end of last semester, and it would be great to get everyone in on this great project. We will be repairing some bikes for whole-sale and then stripping down some bikes to the frames and doing a keep/throw-away system for components. If there are components that you are eyeing that you would like to modify your bike with, just send a message to Matt or Camilla in Teams with an image of the component and indicate that you're interested and we can provide you with a price point if any at all is required. We have collected a list of 5 social community organizations in East Cleveland that could benefit from donation of some of the whole-body bicycles.
We look forward to hearing from all of you, and seeing everyone again soon enough!
